'I put a spell on you' o cómo aceptar un reto / 'I put a spell on you' or the way to accept a challenge

Tell me a better option than 'I put a spell on you' to accept the challenge Fifty Shades offers to Midnight Sun in their first contact? That's what I thought when thinking about that scene of the story. The song came to me without hardly giving me any another option; it was as if it had been designed for the two of them!

EL James had already used it in the second book of the original work (Fifty Shades Darker) in a scene where the two of them meet in the kitchen. On that occasion, it is a choice of Christian himself.

The original song
'I Put a Spell on You' is a song written by Screamin 'Jay Hawkins, later versioned by a large number of artists.
The song begins as a ballad about lost love, but ends up becoming a violent rock, in which Hawkins claims possession of his wife. Hawkins’ intention was to make his 'I Put a Spell on You' a classic bluesy ballad, but the author stated that the producer transformed the recording session into a party where alcohol had considerable influence on the wild version. Anyway, it ended up becoming a classic. 'I Put a Spell on You' was launched in 1956 and quickly became a success despite the boycott of many radio stations and record stores.
This original version of Screamin ' Jay Hawkins integrates the soundtrack of the movie' Stranger Than Paradise' (1984) by Jim Jarmusch.

Versiones

The best known versions are those of Nina Simone (a particularly moving version), Creedence Clearwater Revival (who performed it live at the Woodstock festival), The Animals, Buddy Guy, Them, Joe Cocker, Bryan Ferry, Van Morrison, Nick Cave, Tab Benoit, Tim Curry and Marilyn Manson. Really noteworthy Jeff Beck’s version is, included in his album Emotion&Commotion, in collaboration with Joss Stone. Bette Midler sang her own version as a Salem’s witch character in the Disney movie Hocus Pocus. Newer versions include the disco version of Sonique, with a festive drag queen air.
Letra
Lyrics
For me, the lyrics of this song are full of a torn sensuality that accompanies this love story like a glove.

I put a spell on you because you're mine / Puse un hechizo sobre ti porque eres mío
You better stop the things that you do / Mejor que pares de hacer lo que estás haciendo
I ain't lyin', no, I ain't lyin' / No estoy mintiendo, no, no estoy mintiendo
I just can't stand it babe / Simplemente no puedo soportarlo cariño
The way you're always runnin' 'round / La forma en que siempre estás huyendo
I just can't stand it, the way you always put me down / No puedo soportar cómo me menosprecias
I put a spell on you because you're mine / Puse un hechizo sobre ti porque eres mío
I put a spell on you. I put a spell on you / Puse un hechizo sobre ti. Puse un hechizo sobre ti
I put a spell on you. I put a spell on you / Puse un hechizo sobre ti. Puse un hechizo sobre ti
Nina Simone
Otras canciones que la hicieron famosa fueron’ I Put a Spell on You’, ‘Here Comes the Sun’ de Los Beatles,’ Four Women’,’ I shall be released’, y ‘Aint got no (I got life)’.
En 1992, apareció la autobiografía de Nina Simone titulada ‘I Put a Spell on You’.

Nina Simone
Eunice Kathleen Waymon (Tryon, United States, February 21, 1933 - Carry-le-Rouet, France, April 21, 2003), known as Nina Simone, was an American singer, songwriter and pianist in jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and soul. It is known by the nickname "High Priestess of Soul". She adopted the name Nina Simone in 1954; Nina was the nickname a boyfriend had given to her (the word "girl" in Spanish, ‘niña’, spoken by an English speaker), and she took the name Simone from the French actress Simone Signoret whom she had seen in the movie Casque d'or.
The word that best characterizes Nina Simone is eclecticism. Her voice was characterized by passion, breathiness ( a gasping and breathless voice) and tremolo. Her compositions were full of improvisation and spiritual closeness. Nina had the complicity of the listener with an intentional use of silences and minimizing the accompaniment. When she sang, sometimes did striking transitions between whisper, scream and cry, trying to underline the moods contained in the songs.
Great fighter for civil rights of African people, this struggle is often expressed through her songs. Simone left the United States in 1969, following the assassination of Martin Luther King, weary of racial segregation against African Americans.
She began singing in her local church, while showing a great talent with the piano, which she started playing when she was four years old. When she debuted publicly in a piano recital at the age of ten, her parents, who were sitting in the front row, were forced to move to other ones to let the white attendees occupy their places. Such conditions would motivate her later in life to get involved in the Civil Rights Movement.
At the age of seventeen, Simone moved to Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), where she attended piano classes and accompanied various singers. With the support of several sponsors, including his former music teacher, she was able to study piano at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York City, but the lack of resources prevented her from achieving her dream of becoming the first US black concert pianist. She later auditioned to study piano at the Curtis Institute, but was rejected. Simone was convinced she was rejected for the color of her skin. Her family moved from New York to Philadelphia, where she tried to get a scholarship, but was also rejected by the same reason.
Then, Simone approached to blues and jazz, after starting to work in a nightclub in Atlantic City to help her family financially.
She became known to a wider audience thanks to her performance of the song 'I Love You Porgy’ from George Gershwin, which became her only Top 40 hit in the United States. Then came the single "My Baby Just Cares for Me ' (which would be a hit in the 80s in England to be used in an advertisement of Chanel No. 5).
During the 60s, Simone was involved in the Civil Rights Movement and recorded some political songs.
In 1961, Simone recorded a version of the traditional song 'House of the Rising Sun', which also would be recorded by Bob Dylan and The Animals years later. Other songs that made her famous were 'I Put a Spell on You', 'Here Comes the Sun' by the Beatles, 'Four Women', 'I shall be released', and 'Is not got no (I got life)'. Nina's versatility as an artist is evident throughout her music. In the same concert, you could find kind of religious themes (gospel), blues and jazz, or songs like 'For All We Know', with a classic European style. Her songs have also been used in many films, for example, the song 'Sinnerman' has been used in the two versions of The Thomas Crown Affair, also in Inland Empire (David Lynch) and Cellular (David R. Ellis, 2004) .
Simone left the United States in 1970 and settled down in Barbados. Then, Miriam Makeba, singer and friend of Nina, convinced her to go to Liberia. Later, she lived in Switzerland and Holland before settling in Aix-en-Provence in southern France in 1992. In 1992, Nina Simone's autobiography titled "I Put a Spell on You ' appeared.
The July 24, 1998, Nina Simone was the special guest at the 80th birthday party of Nelson Mandela.
